Slightly unexpectedly, this book is very well written! The characters felt real and fairly deep, and it found some very real moments in this hidden jem. Beebo is a delight, even when you just have to sigh and wonder why she's getting herself into this mess. Definitely recommend giving this book a try.

Okay, so the dialogue is a bit hokey, and the plot a bit unbelievable (even by 1950s potboiler standards), but BEEBO BRINKER is actually kind of a fun read. It starts out really slow, and comes to a screeching halt really fast. I enjoyed seeing how LGBT life was back in the 1950s, so it's good for that reason. And it's got a nice love story. But really, the dialogue can be kind of cringe-worthy.

I was not expecting to enjoy this nearly as much as I did; thus I give it 5 stars for blowing my expectations out of the water vs. 3.5-4 stars it deserves as a book in general.

I want to read more lesbian pulp novels; I hope this isn't going to set my expectations too high.

My dislike of this book probably has a lot to do with my not fully understanding the scope of what "pulp" covers. I went into this expecting something else entirely. What I got was story about a young lesbian discovering and exploring her sexuality with her first lovers...and that was all. It's kinda soapy and melodramatic and wee bit sentimental. But I just didn't find it that fun or interesting. I compare this to my experience of reading Tipping the Velvet earlier this year, which told a similar kind of story, and I enjoyed that so much more. I liked Beebo, but I think I just didn't really connect strongly with any of her lovers to the point that I cared much about her relationships with them. The whole thing just kinda left me cold.

Read for my HIST 336 class. Enjoyed it, although it took me a minute to get into it and to actually be able to focus on it. I am actually considering (maybe) reading the rest of the series!

Beebo's love spells were a bit overly dramatic and tedious for my taste. There wasn’t much character development either. But considering the time period this book was written in it has it’s own historical worth and meant a lot to women who back then had no representation to speak of.
