I read this by accident. It had been sitting around for months and was about to take a trip to the nearest Li'l Free Library when I picked it up and started reading. There musta been a reason it made its home with us, right?
There was.
I like a good mystery, and I enjoy most books that brush against Five Points and the unseemly past. This was no exception, particularly given the museum setting, a healthy dose of bizarre 19th century natural history and plentiful modern-day murders. It's the first Agent Pendergast novel I've read (sure, starting with book #3 is probably bad form), but I doubt it will be the last.

A real page turner! This is my favorite in the series so far. Considering this is only book number three in the series, I have a feeling I'll be saying that again. Twist after twist, I loved it!

Fast paced as far as mystery thrillers go. Final chapters felt too stretched out.

WOW! This one really captured me from the beginning. The choice to focus more on Pendergast and introduce a character like Nora was GREAT! I did miss Margo in this book but loved having another strong woman added to the mix. I really love Bill, too. So the character focuses had me hooked. Chilling and intriguing storyline! This is my favorite so far.

Midway through the story kind of slogged and I found it not as enjoyable as the first 2 entries in the series but none-the-less, I find Pendergast to be quite a compelling, charismatic and deeply interesting enigmatic character.
