powerful, poignant, painful, and relevant at this point in time. Chariandy exhibits a clear understanding of the immigrant experience and the consequences of Othering, writing about a side of contemporary Canada that many do not want to admit exists. through the pain, though, Chariandy also leaves moments in his book for tenderness and male connection, something that is dangerously lacking among many today due to experiences of isolation and oppression. a book that stays with you and lingers.

This book was not the most plot filled thing and it was short. But the intense emotion it evoked earns it 5 stars

A heartbreaking story about family, prejudice, violence, and community. The writing was understated, yet poignant and the discussions of the immigrant plight and issues of masculinity were important and impactful. You grow to care so much for these two brothers and that makes the book all the more tragic
