As far as sequels go, The Undertakers is good. Picking up with Hetty, Benjy, and their found family was fun. I still love the blend of fantasy and historical fiction Nicole Glover created with this series. But the mystery in this wasn't particularly compelling. While I enjoyed reading the book, there was no urgency for me in finding out what happened next.
I do hope Glover continues to write in this universe.

This is a mystery in a historical fantasy setting where the characters who are centered are black, and often former slaves in a post-Civil War world. I love the community and found family in this book, and I love how good and how smart the protagonist and her husband are. Plus, the investigation kept me guessing. I also appreciate the casual queer rep, with a same-sex couple present, and a trans character who's just accepted without question. As with the first book in this series, a thoroughly enjoyable and engrossing read.

I really liked the 1st book, this one felt like it needed a better editor. It was very scattered. I like the world Glover has created, and I do like the characters. I’m usually a plot-driven reader, but this felt like too many little plots popping up & no focus. If there’s a 3rd book, maybe I’ll give that a try & see if Glover can focus herself a bit more.

The mystery kept you guessing and the plot kept pages turning. I still really love the magic in star sigils that has been developed.

Personal preference: What I really wanted from the second book in the series was to dive deeper into the side characters. While you get little tidbits here and there, I really want to see a couple of them shine.

I really enjoyed The Undertakers. It is a unique blend of historical and magical. I loved the idea of magic being part of the underground railroad. Benji and his wife Hetty were magical conductors on the underground railroad, now they have turned their talents to an all together different venture. I loved the blend of mystery, magic and herbalism in this book. The relationship between the central characters are so nuanced and fun to read.
