When you have a body on your floor and a gun with your prints all over it, who do you call?

A super hot morally grey figure from your childhood, that’s who.

Carter Reed is a great read, it has slow burn, crime boss vibes with a bit of ‘who hurt you’ to balance the spice.

Absolutely worth a read :)

this is my first book by tijan. i heard so many positive review about tijan. so i dive into this book.

holy shit! this book is gripping at the beginning. dark and brutal beginning. promising more darker story ahead. but instead it just fall apart.

the heroine, emma is very confusing character. she killed jeremy. then she runs to carter. and then.... she just busy melting for carter. hello!! you just killed someone. she acts like killing someone is not a big of a deal. she went to work and made new friend. hanging out in club and drooling over carter.

and carter..he is suppose to be the serial killer. menacing serial killer. but in my opnion tijan wrote him more like gigolo. a dumb gigolo.

i try to finish the book. but i just can not. DNF at 60%.

DNF...I'm sad to say I bought this book today and just didn't care enough to fully read it. The plot is so damn shaky, I feel like we are in an earthquake. It's one to be a cold blooded killer but this book seems to fail to pull me in. So she killed the guy... I think wounding him would have done just as good. Maybe a couple of well placed bullets, because the damage to Mal had already been done. So Carter is determined to save her and her friends can die......how does that make sense when he has money.. If he loved her then he'd help them disappear. Agh....I'm done

This was a book that really, really struggled to review.

If I was going to base this book on just the lead female, Emma--it would get a two.

But since Carter was so awesome, and the rest of the characters make a sort of epic emotional evolution I had to get the story as a whole credit where it is due.

So, I was off to a great start.

Enter girl. Enter girl coming home early. Enter girl walking in on her friend being brutally rapped and beat so bad she was pretty much close to death at the rate this dude was going at her. Enter friend mindlessly walking to a floorboard. Enter girl grabbing a loaded gun. Enter girl whimpering said rapists name. Cut to girl shooting rapist point blank in the head.

AWESOME START!

I admit, if I was in her place--I would shoot the guy too.

I have a very low tolerance for sex crimes. Therefore, killing the culprit. I am in favor of this type of violence.

So, we continue.

Now, girl needs to be protected because go figure. Rapist is the son of a mob enforcer (This isn't totally laid at but this is what I'm assuming since this dudes men are the ones doing the hits on people.)

Enter--Carter Reed.

Now, I was giving Emma a huge amount of leeway. I mean her best friend is broken. She had to shoot someone in the head. And now she faces the possibility of her life being ended very horribly by mob enforcers. I might have a mini meltdown at this point too.

However, this mini meltdown continues throughout the whole book.

I mean I consider myself a pretty strong person. I would have done the same thing if I was here. Yet, if a mob family was after me? Yeah, I would not question ONE COMMAND given by the mob hitman that was currently keeping me safe.

I like living.

Living is a good thing.

However, Emma kept testing her life every chance she got. I kept thinking this girl can't be that stupid! Oh, she kind of was. She went from awesome to dumb pretty quick for me.

Then she had a moment of awakening.

I was like YAY!

Then she got too stupid to live again.

*sighs*

I bet your wondering why I gave this book a three star?

Because the writing was strong, the other characters I was able to relate to and understand, Amanda was my favorite and I would love to see a HEA for her. She deserved it. She was literally the most reasonable person in the whole book, she kinda stole every scene she was in. As if even the author related to her the most.

Cater Reed--Oh, sweet Jesus thank you for Carter Reed. I should probably remove all respect I have for him based on his undying love for a woman that was just an idiot.

I don't like the blame the author--but I feel like the writer wrote Emma as stupid just to have more intense situations go down at certain points. If you would have NOT made her fun into huge gun show downs--the scene would have still been intense. It was a MOB GUN FIGHT FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!

Back to Carter.

He was every woman's anti-hero dream!

He was in love, he was dangerous, he was super hot, and he could be fun when he was just kicking it alone with his woman.

It was these moments that I appreciated in the couple.

It seemed Emma forgot how to be silly and weepy and he remembered that he was a human and not a hired killer.

I have to admit that I really couldn't put it down. I kept reading and there were a great many redeemable moments.

I appreciated her killing the person near the end. How she did it was so out of character of Emma that I wish the author would have given me THAT Emma the whole way through and this book would have been a huge win!

I am judging this book more because of the hype. When so many people gush and its sitting at like Amazon #3 overall--it better rock my socks off.

The plot of the story rocked me way more than the lead female and that is such a shame.

I liked it okay enough…but I have questions about Carter and Emma’s first encounter and how he didn’t recognize her? Also, despite their history it felt a bit insta-lovey for me…maybe would have enjoyed some flashbacks of them growing up. It also could have been wrapped up a bit quicker than it was.
