2023 update:
I read this for storytime again, and it was great! My familiarity with it made it easier to get the cadence right, and the parents and grandmas laughed and smiled at all the right moments. It was fun to read this for Valentine's week again.
2022 review:
I found this at the library when I was looking for love-related books to add to a display, and I ended up using it for storytime. It was perfect for the evening after Valentine's Day, because it fit with the week's love theme without being holiday-related. The book focuses on the people, places, experiences, and feelings like that the young narrator loves, and it's sweet and full of warmth.
The illustrations are beautiful, and the 1970s poem is fun and full of energy. Because the poem is basically a run-on sentence, I occasionally had to change or add words to fit with the cadence that I was reading with, because there was no way for me to perfectly predict the rhythm that I needed to be using. However, it still worked, and the kids and adults enjoyed it. I liked this, and will keep in mind as an option for future displays and storytimes.

Such joy in the words and pictures in this book. Impossible to read without smiling. I've always found the poetry of Eloise Greenfield to be uplifting and pairing this poem with Jan Spivey Gilchrist's illustrations makes you want to be there with the narrator as she moves through a summer day. This works very well as a mentor text for young poets, or simply for a splash of fun in the day.
