A solid 4.5. Started off strong (I enjoyed the “meow” chapter). I got bogged down in some of the species details a few chapters in, and I was irritated by the author saying “more research is needed” several times early on. But I’m glad I kept going, because there were so many explorations of interesting topics — many of which I felt compelled to share with my family. My early concerns about it perhaps being poorly-researched were way off. And the science was almost always explained in a way that was both interesting and easy to follow. My favorite kind of non-fiction book!

This guy loves cats and evolutionary genetics, and he isn’t afraid to be cheesy as hell about it. Same bro. Plus one star for describing molecular evolution in a popular science book, even if just in a footnote.

Written in an engaging style, the author still manages to clearly explain sometimes technical details of the various studies and science surrounding these captivating animals.

A solid, quick read. I definitely learned some fun things. I think the book's main takeaway is that we know very little about cats. Which is a decent takeaway. Someone's gotta point it out.
