Spicy Level: š¶ļø/5 (We get some sexy time but it's fade to black)
So I initially went into this highly sceptical and doubtful that I'd find any redeeming qualities to make me OBSESSED with this series, as I see so many people are... and while I am not obsessed and still think past me was slightly crazy and delusional...this book was definitely better than book 1!
I don't abore Celaena Lillian Elentiya Aelin or whatever the crap her name is but I don't hate her as much as I did in book 1. I liked this more as she wasn't as infuriating as in book 1 since she seemed to grow up. She wasn't obsessed with her clothing and looks, or not being invited to events. I guess being called a "coward" by your friend for not serving the greater cause can do that to you. She turns quiet ruthless when certain events occur in the book.
While I don't really like love triangles this one was....actually no... I still hate love triangles. The unnecessary angst - to me, it still feels like such a cop-out "not like the other girls" YA trope that seems too easy to do...I prefer Dorian to Chaol and I cannot wait for when Shadow Daddy becomes a full-fledged Shadow Daddy!
The writing (annoying Celaena aside) is excellent, there is something about the world-building and general writing of SJM that can suck you in and lull you. It's very well written and the main reason I am continuing on my listening journey. The plot starts to pick up in this as there has been more time to develop the world and things start falling into place. A few mysteries are solved as we finally learn how everything that has been happening is tied together. But we are still presented with numerous twists and turns and a cliffhanger.
Overall still confused as to why I needed to have read 2 books to start being hooked on a series but I can feel that this little fishy is almost falling for the bait of Throne of Glass's Fantasy World...

ā¶ Hidden Identity
ā¶ Unexpected Twists and Turns

The chapters were really short and the story felt fast-paced, there wasn't a lot oft unnecessairy situations and we mostly just got right to the action, which was motivating to keep reading. I think SJM's writing gets better and better and is really easy to understand.
Chaols and Celaenas relationship was just so fun and wholesome to watch. The way they kept teasing each other and just were so in love made me smile.
I looooved the plot of Dorian having magic and slowly understanding it better and better, it gave the book even more exciting turns and makes it feel magical.
Celaena is a really good female main character, she's empowering, independent, her reactions feel human and she's not the "small, little, fragile" girl.
I think the way Nehemia's death was placed was really good and fitting and rounded up the story really well, even if it was pretty sad and emotional.
I'm really looking forward to see how the characters and the storyline is going to develope within the next few books.

Maas improved his writing and honed everything that didnāt work in the first book, bringing the story forward.
I really enjoyed reading about Celaenaās character in this book. Sheās a total badass, and it was amazing to witness her in action. Now I understand why everyone was afraid of her - sheās deadly. This book helped me to see how vulnerable she was when Chaol and Dorian took her out of jail. Sheās such a complex character, and I didnāt fully appreciate that in the first book.
The relationship between Chaol and Celaena is natural and realistic. Chaol struggles with his own desires and fears. He tries to remain loyal to the crown and resist the temptation to be with Celaena. Unfortunately, this internal conflict leads him to make poor decisions. Resulting in him losing everything. The dynamic between Chaol and Celaena is reminiscent of Valek and Yelenaās relationship in Poison Study.
Dorian is a character that I had a little affection for. But in this book, he conquered me. At first, his presence doesnāt seem relevant. But, as the story progresses, his subplot takes on a lot of weight.
In the first book, I felt his relationship with Celeana was forced. However, in this book, their relationship is fluid and natural. They forged a meaningful and powerful friendship. They understand each other perfectly.
This bookās unexpected twists and turns pleasantly surprised me. The authorās approach to revealing the major plot twist was cleverly executed. The last pages are an emotional wreck. This secret impacts the relationship of Celeana with one of the other characters, changing the dynamic between them and setting the stage for the next book. Itās brilliant.
Crown of Midnight gets dark and bloody with betrayal, revelations, heartbreaks, twists, and turns. The story is way bigger and more complex than it seems. Iām so eager to get the other book.
