2.5 stars - Shadow & Flame might be one of my most disappointing reads of the year. Onyx & Ivory was great and then it's just followed up with. . . this. I don't understand why the author skipped 1.5 years of plot before starting this book. The prologue takes place 6 months after the events at the end of Onyx & Ivory and the first chapter is 1 year after that. An entire war happened in that time frame that is only ever mentioned in passing. This is probably the first time EVER I would advocate for adding a third book to a series to make sure the reader gets the full experience. There were also lots of plain old dumb things the characters did that made Shadow & Flame such a hard read. The characters' relationships didn't feel as authentic and Corwin needed to be punched in the face more than once.

I thought the first book in this duology was pretty good. It wasn't a favorite, but I liked it enough to want to see what happened next. Unfortunately this book has been hard to get into. It feels completely different from the first book and is kind of depressing. After trying to get interested in this and not succeeding, I've decided to give up on it.

This book started with a bang. I almost didn't want to read it because of the beginning but of course I kept going. I love the Rollercoaster this book took me on emotionally. We lost some people along the way but I guess it couldn't be helped. My heart was broken more than once but it was also healed. Excellent conclusion to the story.

I’m so disappointed...I really enjoyed the first book but this one had none of the fun and adventure its predecessor has. It was rushed, clumsy, and dramatic to the point of eye rolling. The characters seemed like shells of themselves and were so OOC. I’m bummed.

If I could rate this book 10 out of 10, I would! There were many subplots to both books but the writing never made me confused & all of my questions were answered by the end. I was so glad Mindee Arnett gave more time to Signe & Bonner's backstory & their story overall. I listened to the majority of Shadow & Flame on audio. This duology will be a re-read for me!
