I should have heeded the warnings in the reviews. Awful characters, painfully slow first half, and when it picks up again it’s just cliche after cliche. Maybe my expectations were too high, but this is among the worst books I remember reading and has probably put me off from Adam Silvera forever.

Mixed feelings, that’s probably the best way to describe it.
The good doesn’t outweigh the bad for me, but I still doubted between 3 and 4 stars, so let’s say it’s a 3,5-ish.
Spoilers after the ***
The things I loved about this book were living on in this world with the characters for longer, and having a (growing) villain that I actually disliked so, so much.
And there are great bits, that really made me want to keep reading. But there were so many chapter I feel could’ve been skipped. This book really didn’t need to be 500+ pages.
I feel like it was a mistake to read this book so soon after the first, because it made the first 100 or so pages a dread to get through. There was so much reminiscing of book 1 and so little progress on things, that it took me a while to get through it. It felt annoying even, at some points.
Then, it takes almost another 100 pages to actually have things starting to happen and even when it does, it’s slightly disappointing.
***
They break in a bit, save some people, and then there’s all this presidential campaigning that took on a far larger role but didn’t seem to give us much progress to the storyline.
And then the most interesting things happen in the last 60 or so pages and leave you with a cliffhanger. It doesn’t make sense at all.
But I do want to praise the characters in the phoenix sanctuary, Wyatt and Nox, my new favourite characters. It’s just so heartbreaking that Emil, when he barely knows Ness, leaves Wyatt like that for him?? I like Ness, but Wyatt doesn’t deserve this
