Read for book club. Beautiful descriptions, frustrating and heavy exposition, a disconnect between character actions and ruminations, and difficult emotional tensions to move through despite the short length.

A friend said this was his favorite book but I've picked it up and put it down multiple times because although the writing is phenomenal, the intensity of the internalized homophobia and the absolute vitriol with which the perspective character voices hateful opinions of those around him (particularly and especially gender nonconforming people) was too upsetting for me. I imagine if I were to finish the book I might see what others have found so meaningful in it but I haven't been able to push through this time.

Honesty is intimacy, and intimacy is vulnerability. In a world where one's own flesh is traded for food—where a dirty old fairy's seed is an outrageous aperitif before the first hot meal you've had in weeks—it's not easy to be vulnerable. So it's much easier to lie. But when you lie to yourself, you hate yourself. And when you hate yourself, you hate everything your eyes see, everything which touches you skin, all the places where, and people whereon you rest your weary head. Drenched in the sweet odors of cognac, cigarette smoke, and cold dripping sweat, love stories don't come more tragic than this, mes chers

A challenging, poetic, dramatic, heartbreaking heavy read. To note: if sensitive please check the trigger warnings. The main character is deeply torn from internalised homophobia and transphobia.

Not for me, but I think it's just personal taste so I didn't give it a rating. I understand why this book is important, but I just hated everyone in it so it was hard to care about anything that happened.
