There was only one character I felt like I could identify with, and there wasn't enough of that character. The dialogue was frankly boring and repetitive. This was just a no for me.

I was disappointed by this book. Meant to be a retelling of the Biblical Esther, this book both stuck too closely to the original and the deviations that it made from the plot did very little to add interest. Set in 2006, it talks about a modern type of anti-Semitism. On the other hand, the opportunity to explore the reasons for that anti-Semitism, including the growing reaction to it by a young girl who has been out of touch with her culture but becomes more brave and the indifference to it by an authority figure were not taken.

I picked this up thinking it would be a sort of fun adaptation of the story of Esther, maybe a little closer to chic lit. But, I was surprised to find that Good for the Jews was much more complicated than that. It had a really complex approach to the modern question of whether Jews now are white or whether they are still considered a minority. The parallels between the book and the traditional story were really what kept me going. A surprisingly thoughtful book!
