This book is just exceptional on all levels. The use of the graphic novel format brings the story to life in an incredible way with the use of shade and colour done really well. There is no sugar-coating or sweetening of the realities, and while the author provides a sympathetic to all characters, she firmly situates them in the context and realities of the historical period, while allowing glimpses of what they might have been.
A very powerful book and a welcome addition to texts on slavery, oppression and human rights.

Disturbing but extraordinary speculative fiction about accidental time travel into the more-racist past.

Rufe is a jerk. Still unsure how she loses her arm, but I think that this was a really interesting combination of history, sci-fi, and art.
