full disclosure: i received an arc from a goodreads giveaway.

this was stressful. i am stressed. at about a hundred pages left, i was just going to read a chapter then take a shower. instead i one more'd and one more'd and one more'd it until i was reading the last word. this isn't a genre i pop into often and i very much know why because the suspense was murder, but so freaking well done. i was invested in everything: the characters, the twists, the schemes, the who's-double-crossing-whom, and even bug automatically noting the make, model and engine of every car he came across. it was wild and wholly enjoyable to spend a few days in his head, and i fully recommend the ride!

Not my usual genre, but as a former Virginian I appreciated the setting. Feels like an action movie.

Hey, remember that movie Ronin with the incredible car chase scene? Well that car chase scene is a book, now, called Blacktop Wasteland. If you liked that movie scene (I sure did) then you're bound to like this book. Okay, there's more to the book than car chases, and the other stuff is good, too, but -- and don't take this the wrong way, it's a compliment! -- the other stuff feels like support for the car chases, not vice versa. Would I read more of this writer? You bet I would!

This is my least favorite S.A. Cosby book. I had trouble connecting with the characters and the plot.

uneven and 20% too long but really scratched an itch for a well-turned, machosensitive crime story with a non-police protagonist. the opening chapter in particular rips. bruce springsteen's "racing in the street" prosified. daddy issues, desire to be a good husband/father, muscle cars, some goofball supporting characters. there are a few blips in the quality of the prose and not a lot for non-male characters to do other than need help, but overall a satisfying read with subtly righteous politics. audiobook performance by adam lazarre-white was killer.
