My English professor introduced me to this book. And I am really grateful for her to have done that. I am not really a big time fan of slow moving classics, but this book hit me in the chest for thinking so. It is a damn good read for anyone who wants to go through their childhood days. This book would gently take your hand and guise you through the streets of the town of Jem and Scout. This book very well showcases the thoughts of children whose minds are untouched by the ghastly horrors of the true world lying behind them...That does sort of make me feel guilty for to have evolved the world so...

I really love Scout as a narrator. The way she is simultaneously a 6-8ish year old and a reminiscing adult is unique and nostalgic. (I've read some critics complain that her voice is unrealistic, but boo hoo, it's a novel my guy).
Obviously this isn't a comfortable book. The n-word is used dozens of times, bad things happen to good people, some stereotypes rear their ugly heads, and an overarching theme is the loss of innocence. There were a few characters I wasn't sold on (most notably Tom Robinson--the poor guy was written as an infantilised sympathy puddle), but overall I thought most were complex, realistically flawed, and in a lot of cases, very funny.
Despite its valid criticisms (at the end of the day, it's a book with racial themes written by a White woman 60 years ago), I just love the writing style. I have never been to the Deep South, and especially not in the 1930s, but I feel like I have. I could picture every house, hear every voice, and feel the lazy heat rising from every dirt road.
Also, I thought that class issues were discussed with more nuance than people seem to give the book credit for? So there.

I'm so happy that I finished this book in midnight. Cause otherwise I know I couldn't do anything all day long. After I read a really good book, though I've never read one as good as this, it takes me a while to digest it. I still can't understand how one can write a book so full but so short. Even from the foreword you can feel that her writing is something else. I think I will come back to this book in the near future.
