A solid 3.5 stars. One of the best books in the series - Charley is once again interesting, funny, and worth reading about. Glad I decided to give her another chance.

Charlie with amnesia was not my favorite - even if I totally got why this happened. And it may have been important to the overall story, too. I didn't fully understand why it was best to keep her in the dark for most of the book, though.

The Dirt on Ninth Grave
3.5 Stars

Suffering from amnesia Charley Davidson (now Janey Doer) is working as a waitress in Sleepy Hollow, New York. Surrounded by strangers who seem to know more about her than she does, Janey doesn't know who to trust when she observes some suspicious activity in the antique shop next door. Can she tell her new best friend, Cookie? Or perhaps the sexy new cook with his hot eyes and devastating touch? Should she tell them that she can also see the dead?

Despite my love for Charley, Reyes and the rest of the gang, this installment is nothing more than filler. While the book has all of Jones's trademark wit and humor, most of the plot threads (and there are a lot of them) are irrelevant to the ongoing story arc.

In addition to Charley's loss of memory (which lasts 3/4 of the book), there is an antiques dealer being held hostage in his store, a waitress whose baby is being haunted, a police officer with stalker tendencies, a retired detective with a demon in his stomach and a homeless man with nefarious intentions. Charley eventually resolves all of these issues, but the most interesting developments only come toward the end, which is very frustrating.

As always, the highlight of the book is Charley's relationship with Reyes as she rediscovers her love for him. Watching him struggle with his inability to tell her the truth is heartbreaking, but all's well that ends well, and he is there for her in every way when she needs him.

All in all, not the best installment in the series, but the revelations at the end do open up new avenues for exploration in future books, and Charley will have her work cut out for her if she is to have a happily ever after with Reyes and her friends.

I'm on the fence with this one. Do I give it 3 stars or 4? I liked it but it won't go down as my favorite book in the series. I still love Charlie though, so I'm giving it four and waiting for the next book in the series to see what happens next.

'These authors just don't know when to stop. 10th book? Get some new idea!' - I bet you thought something like this when you encountered some huge series. I must admit, I had my doubts how Darynda Jones is going to keep it fresh and interesting for so long. But she proved all my doubts wrong.

The Dirt on Ninth Grave is one of the best books in Charley Davidson series. It had all the things that kept me reading for so long:
+ Addiction to coffee
+ Charley's ADD
+ A couple of mysteries entangled to make everyone lives harder
+ We got a reminder why Charley fell for Reyes.

I have probably already said this, but ... All you UF and PNR fans, if you haven't already, give this series a shot. It's so much fun!

I loved the twist on this one. Darynda Jones does an amazing job keeping the reader intrigued because you never know where the story will go next. there are some things you can predict happening and then boom something you didn't see or didn't even think of occurs.

Listened for fun (borrowed from a friend)
Overall Rating: 3.75
Story Rating: 3.50
Character Rating: 4.00

Audio Rating: 5.00 (not part of the overall rating)

First Thought when Finished: The Dirt on Ninth Grave made me laugh, cry, and fist pump when the mystery part was back to being part of the series!

Quick Thoughts: I made 5 people read Ninth Grave before I would give it a whirl because of the troupe introduced in 8th. It is probably one of my least favorite so I had to know that it wouldn't last very long. In fact, this would have been higher rated but between about 55% to 85% I was annoyed with it. It just went on a little too long for me (not so much on Janey's side but her friends/family). I did love the end though and will pick up 10 when it comes out. That will really be the clincher to me if I continue the series. Nine brought back mystery (which is what made me fall in love with in the series--I used to call them Cozy Mystery/UF) and the humor that I loved (Cookie/Janey/Charley=Awesome). It also brought back more straight-forward storylines and interactions. All of that was terrific! I was just giddy. Where I am a little worried is that the end might cause 10 to be more like 8 (all over the place storylines) but I am holding out hope that we have gotten back to the basics for Charley and gang!

Overall The Dirt on Ninth Grave was very funny with a dab of tissues needed! Well worth the listen!

Audio Thoughts:
Narrated By Lorelei King / Length: 10 hrs and 11 mins

I have never "read" one of these books because Lorelei just knocks it out the park. Seriously, if you haven't listened to these--you need too. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
