I was really looking forward to reading this book; I've heard good things about it my whole life and I somehow managed to make it to age 24 and major in English without reading it. But I was extremely disappointed. I thought Jane was a very unlikeable protagonist; she was cold and hard with the man who loved her (Mr. Rochester) and disgustingly subservient to a man who would only use her for labor (St. John). It horrifies me that she even considered for a moment marrying him. I felt that most of the conflict in the novel was completely contrived, much like a modern-day chick flick. I actually put the book down on page 200, intending to stop reading it completely, but then I figured that since I had entered the Goodreads challenge, I would finish it.

I will say that I did like the ending; it made me smile a little bit, but there are so many other classic novels that are so much better.

Okay I'll be honest, while I did enjoy reading this I don't get what all the fuss (and hundreds of tv/film versions) is all about. Yes Jane Eyre is a strong female character, as are pretty much all of the Bronte sisters leads, but typical as soon as someone proposes marriage she falls to pieces and becomes the typical woman of the time, which was rather disappointing. Bronte does have a knack for creating interesting and believable characters and I did enjoy the firey nature of the younger Jane, particularly as she stands up to her not so pleasant aunt and cousin and felt a little let down when this didn't continue into adulthood as one would expect it to. And although I did find myself getting frustrated by some of Jane's decisions I was engrossed enough to want to finish the book and given I'm not one for the more romantic classics that is quite an achievement.
