I won’t lie, I really struggled with this book when I first started reading it, I found on main characters, voice really grating, but throughout the book, I realise how close his personality was actually to mine maybe I just didn’t like seeing my own internal monologue reflected back to me, but then again it could be because I would just wasn’t used to hearing that kind of writing style, but after I got over that initial dislike and pushed through it, I ended up really enjoying this book I hope the sequel is just as good and enjoyable as the first book

I’m conflicted. I most likely am not the  target audience ( cis woman in her 30’s) but this ultimately is very much a YA book with a lot of representation which was a plus in my book. But there was too much explaining of plot points that didn’t need explaining, lots of repetition of word choices that didn’t need repeating (how many times do people huff and puff and bite their lips ?) & Gen Z / old tumblr / watt pad speak that took me out of the fantasy element of the story. I would definitely see a teenager growing up in the 2000’s appreciating this but an old millennial like me is too nit picky about the editing I would have done.

"I'm not a boy stuck in a girl's body. My body is a boy's body because I'm a boy and it's mine."
My favorite quote from an otherwise very obnoxious book.

The book features an unlikeable main character and the author defends this with their life. (But I Stan an author that'll go to bat for their babies). I personally can't stand it and it made the book unbearable - among the countless other issues I had with it; (one of the other biggest ones being the use of gen z terms that made it an entirely cringe-worthy experience). People think that you shouldn't dislike a book because it has an unlikeable character because the point of an unlikeable character is to be unlikable... And I agree. But, in my opinion, they shouldn't ruin the whole book? I don't think I dislike books featuring unlikable characters, especially because I read one soon after this one and enjoyed it, I think I dislike books that do it poorly

  • Okay, I read like 130 pages in one go which I hardly ever do now. This is seriously so good so far.
  • I’m really liking Wyatt and his character so far. I’m really liking it from his perspective and how he comments on things and I finding it very enjoyable to read.
  • Briar is literally amazing. I love her a lot and her friendship with Wyatt is incredible and I could read it all day.
  • Emyr is annoying me a lot bit. He’s trying to be all kind and relate to Wyatt and shit and is then all confused when Wyatt isn’t returning it when he was essentially taken here against his will. Then openly says he won’t break the spell thing which would allow Wyatt to stay home with his family and have freedom and happiness because Emyr wants the throne and because he doesn’t want to break the bond despite knowing it will make Wyatt miserable. So yeah, at the moment, fuck Emyr and I hope he gains some sense later on.
  • Also, fuck Tessa.
  • Okay, maybe not fuck Tessa quite as much. I swear to god though, she has a fucking lot of making up to do. Such a fucking lot.
  • Emyr isn’t such a bitch, and I do understand a bit of what he’s going through, but still, the fact that he openly admitted he doesn’t care about Wyatt’s wants or happiness has to be addressed before I can actually start to like him.
  • The rest are honestly cool. I’m still annoyed that Jin and Clarke are making all these comments about failed flirting and how they should be together when it’s quite obvious that Wyatt doesn’t want to be there or at least that he’s been brought there against his will. They’re just annoying me a bit.
  • Briar, as always, is perfect in every way. And Boom is adorable.
  • Literally fucking fuck Derek. An absolute asshole bastard and I want him to die. I want him to die so fucking bad. And literally every other Fae in that kingdom, istg.
  • Okay, it would’ve been a five stars but there were a few things I didn’t like.
  • The whole Emyr dragging Wyatt to Asalin and coercing him into marriage was resolved but not in the way I hoped. I wish there was more of an apology and stuff.
  • The scenes with Derek made me uncomfortable and my heart was racing and shit which was a fine part of the story, as in there were trigger warnings and it wasn’t presented as a good thing, I just didn’t like it.
  • I wish the end parts were more clear and were sorted through more, like the shit with Briar I’m still a bit confused on and the whole thing with Emyr dying and being brought back I just didn’t really know what was going on until afterwards.
  • I did really like it though and I like that it ended with them both on a hood note. I did really enjoy reading this.
  • I’ve always been iffy on Clarke tbh, and I’m actually a bit weird with Jim as well?? I don’t know why, but I think it’s partly with how they keep trying to ‘force’/convince Wyatt and Emyr to be together, it just makes me uncomfortable.
  • Derek can obviously rot in hell, fuck him. I’m now iffy with Kadri as well, like Wyatt is a child, of course he was manipulated in some way?? How can you blame him from wanting to leave an arranged marriage he didn’t want?? Also, that Leon guy is a bit shitty too.
  • So yeah, overall I liked it, but it’s not a favourite like I though it would be which is fine because I still really enjoyed it.
