Originally rated it a 5 stars after reading, now I rate it a 4 as I read another 5 star read directly after it and started comparing the two experiences. I saw many reviews criticizing the world building, and how it didn’t make sense, or how they didn’t like the main character Wyatt. Personally, I came into it expecting a feel good sappy fantasy with a romance plot, and it provided just that. I didn’t read it for the complex world building and magic system. I read it purely for good vibes and it delivered, which is why I liked it. EDIT: now 3.5 stars after many months.

This was a super fun read. The protagonist is hilarious and I love the inner monologue from this writer. Literally I was laughing the entire book. Even with how funny it was,  the plot and characterizations never suffered!

What an incredible and beautiful story focusing on a complex and layered main character. I love the world building, the language and the characters

Great ideas poorly done. There’s so much I wanted to love about this but I was so disappointed. I hate to say that I’m glad it’s over so I don’t have to read anything more about you tongues flicking over lips, wings shooting out, more mouth stuff constantly over and over again. I didn’t even mind the meme-y writing, I think that’s actually fun. I just cannot with these descriptions repeating what easily has to be at least 100 times.

It also feels like the story needed some rearranging and adjustment of length of various scenes. There was so much potential :(

 - Hi hi welcome to another QUEER SCREAMING review! THE WITCH KING is packed with so much good stuff: found family, the fluidity of trans identity, a huge spectrum of genders, sexualities, races, and more.
- Though the book is a wild ride through the fae kingdom, it also covers a lot of hard topics, too: cruel parents, trauma recovery, broken friendships, racism, trying to burn the system down.
- You know I love a book with a prickly protagonist, and that's Wyatt. He makes a lot of bad choices and says a lot of hurtful things impulsively, but much of this book is about him and his friends growing through it together.
- THE WITCH KING is just such a unique book for so many reasons that I can't fit it all here. If you love queer fantasy, put it at the top of your list!
