I'm honestly not sure I liked this. I don't hate it. But oh my goodness is it so very descriptive. I feel like I may be missing something or the characters are just slightly bi-polar and/or schizophrenic. The book also hops over the line between erotic and vulgar which didn't work and I think Hawke knew it the further he went along cause I mostly had that problem in the beginning.

The tone was interesting and frustrating and somewhat melancholy. Nicely written. I feel like it doesn't really go anywhere and didn't quite reach it's intended destination quite clearly. Everytime I thought I could get behind Jimmy or Christy something would happen or they would say something that would completely whip me out of the mood. Purposefull or not, I'm not sure. Jimmy and Christy seemed so wishy washy depending on the situation and how their mood was in that particular moment.

I sure didn’t want to like the characters as I found them pretty un-likable but I was rooting for them and actually kinda grew to love them. Does that even make sense? I have read better books and worse books but these characters will stick with me for awhile. They were flawed and yet so relatable!

Interesting book about a frail relationship with lots of complications. The best part was the narration by the author, who has a terrific reading voice.

Yes, these characters can be unlikeable but they’re still interesting. And it’s a romance novel written by Ethan Hawke! It made me swoon and sometimes hate myself shortly thereafter.

So the problem of being a recognizable actor who has also written a novel is that it's hard to separate the screen persona/actor from the main character, especially if the main character occupies the same general demographic as the author. With Hawke's first novel, I never successfully separated the two people actor/author and main character, which detracted from my enjoyment of said novel. In this novel, I spent the first portion picturing Jimmy as Ethan Hawke, but eventually was able to discard this and wrap myself in the story. Having said all that, I loved the "voice" in this story. It was hard-driving and descriptive, took no prisoners and just kept rolling along until the end came.
