As a prototype for standard medieval literature, ‘Erec’ is successful. However, it lacks really any subtlety or humanity, both of which appear with great success in some of Hartmann’s other works. Character development is two-dimensional at best, and non-existent at worst, not only in modern standards but compared to Hartmann’s fantastic hagiography ‘Gregorius’. A disappointment, on the whole.
