Well, first of all, I could not put this book down, and didn't. I just finished it all the way through in one shot. So that says something about how good it is. However, there are definitely a lot of terrible morals in this book that I just can't get past.

Mainly, the friendships, and relationships in this book seem to always end up being so shallow - especially when it comes to Tally. It really bugs me. Tally first of all totally forgets about David. I guess at first I can understand because it's something with her brain. Then when she remembers David, she has no feelings for him anymore? C'mon, that's not real. After all they went through, she's so quick to just ditch him. I hated that. Then, she's so quick to just leave Peris behind; who, even though we didn't see it, she grew up with her whole life. Pretty shallow. Not that I'm a big fan of Shay, but all along Tally is stabbing her in the back. Although I really do like Zane's character, he seems like a really good guy - Tally is seeming pretty darn shallow and selfish so I hope she doesn't just up and ditch him too.

Don't get me wrong though, this book is really interesting and keeps you sucked in, waiting to see what happens next. But the fact that the word "ugly" is thrown around so much, even after they're "cured" is just disgusting. She looks at David (who probably for the record is NOT ugly, but average looking) and all she can think is that he's ugly. She doesn't remember how she felt about him, what he did for her, or anything. Nothing's changed about her, all she seems to see is people's looks (who probably aren't even really that bad). Tally is just so quick to throw friendships and what seemed like meaningful relationships down the drain.

I just hope in the next book she doesn't ditch Zane as well. David seems like a lost cause at this point because she totally broke his heart after he did so much for her. David's mom also seems to be quite different than the first book. I totally understand that her husband died. But at the same time, she just seems so bitter now towards everything, no matter what.

Well, despite all of that, I will be reading the next one. I gave it 3 stars still because it is a very intriguing series that I plan on finishing and I just couldn't put it down. But I didn't give it 4 because of all the terrible messages it's sending out that I just can't seem to get past now that I've put the book down and started to think about it.

I was obsessed with this series as a kid and since the Uglies movie came out I wanted to revisit the series and man this was cringe. Narrator was good and it was a quick listen but if I hear “bubbly” or “bogus” one more time I will lose it. Probably won’t read the rest just wanted to reminisce ✨

Aaa argh I'm just so in LOVE with that book. I remember how I read uglies a few years ago and I think I didn't quite understand how deep this series really is. It makes me ask all the phylosophical questions to myself and makes me really think about our world order and society today. Just like a good dystopian novel should. I also really enjoy Tallies character and how realistic Westerfield can play with the language and thoughts in his books. You can really differ when tally is having pretty thought or ugly thoughts or SEMI pretty thoughts. Also I ship her and Zane and though it's not an OTP kind of ship, I still like the connection they have :)

I liked this continuation of the story despite it feeling cringe or cliche at times… I think I have to accept that is an inevitable feeling for a 25 year old reading YA. The pretty speak was a little annoying at first but becomes more natural over time. Also I know this book was written during a different time but there is repeated use of the “R” slur. Of course there has to be a love triangle, and in my opinion Tally and Zane’s relationship feels way more natural than her and David’s. I gasped when Tally called Zane David though. Some things didn’t make sense to me and pulled me away from the story - like the Rusty plague that spread through oil but also killed people??

Favorite quote: “Maybe she’d always been bubbly, somewhere inside. It only took loving someone - or being in the wild, or maybe just a plunge into freezing water - to bring it out”

Overall I love the drama and it’s still an interesting take on beauty culture.
