I felt like it was a little bit of a slow start to try to get to know the characters and the worldbuilding, but as soon as I saw the two characters and their connection I was able to fully immerse in the story. Then I never wanted the story to end. The male characters love for the female character was absolutely to die for. I loved watching them fall in love and I loved all the commentary. I enjoyed watching them, make each other better and there was a great payoff when they finally admitted to being in love with each other. I will probably read the second book.

This is most certainly a Romantasy- heavy on the romance aspect. I didn’t really know where this book would go- it’s so unique. And I was pleasantly surprised, as I hung on, along for the ride. I loved how the characters unfolded. There was a spot here and there where I called what would happen
like when the B&B was getting robbed and it ended up being Forest
The beginning was slow, but the second half of the book made it worth it. I really wish we had more scenes/time with Attie. I genuinely enjoyed this story, but it didn’t blow me away- which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.

Young YA. Info dumps without enough exploration of motives.

I loved the epistolary elements of this book, and the writing was absolutely beautiful! The love story felt very Pride & Prejudice-inspired. I liked the setting, but I thought there could have been a bit more worldbuilding. The fantasy elements (other than the magic typewriters and Kitt's magic house) felt too abstract. I don't feel like I got a good sense of the gods and the monsters, but I'm assuming that will be explored more in the sequel. Still, for most of the book, I felt like I was just reading a WWI historical novel instead of a different fantasy world inspired by WWI. I didn't understand the main characters' decision to
stay and defend the town even though they were not soldiers and had no fighting training or equipment. They didn't accomplish anything at all by staying, so the decision felt contrived for plot reasons.
. Another thing that seemed contrived for plot reasons is
Forest not revealing himself sooner and instead deciding that waiting to kidnap Iris during battle was the best course of action.

When I started Divine Rivals I wasn’t sure what to expect. I struggled with the slow pace at first, but very quickly found it endearing. The write by was beautiful, the character development was exquisite, and it is such a breath of fresh air from your typical fantasy! Love love love, and can’t wait to start the next one!

Instant five stars. This book was the kind of predictable that made you hope you were wrong and any drop in action left you waiting for the other shoe to drop. It was so tense and well-developed. I was so scared to start it but so worth the hype.
