“How many people like me were out there, fingertips hovering above nothing?”

Starting off in the real-world pandemic that we currently find ourselves in, but then going into a kind of... dystopian hint of a nightmare and suggestions of evil overlords and whispers of mass killings under the ruse of free vaccinations, this story yanked me RIGHT IN!

For such a short read, it really covered a range of issues but what struck me most, was the impact of social media and how free we all feel to judge and comment on situations in ways that we would never dream of in real life. I think it perfectly outlined the dangers but also addictiveness of over exposure online as well as reminding us that through this pandemic, we have in fact NOT all been in the same boat but just in the same storm, with some people sheltered in reinforced submarines, and others hanging onto the edge of a bit of driftwood.

The end was not what I was expecting and I felt duped on behalf of the main protagonist who had both been using someone and allowed herself to be used seemed for a moment to forget that she was always going to be worse off - or was she? Was it the quick escape that she needed or is there more to her feelings that is just going over my head?

Love a short read! Blasted this on my lunch break today just because it was available in PRIME READING and I am glad that I did!

"whether accessing the spoils of settler violence meant designing my own reparations or acquiescing to white supremacy, I couldn't tell..."

not sure what this was supposed to do but it didn’t work for me.

it just felt like a very long drawn out thought about something completely unimportant-the name, nickname or possible changed name.

Second in Amazon’s Currency Collection, I Would Be Doing This Anyway takes place in an alternate reality version of the COVID-19 pandemic (but still pretty close to reality) that centers around “influencer” culture and our unhealthy obsession with analyzing and criticizing the behaviors of said influencers.

I enjoyed this story more than I expected to. I felt that Jia Tolentino’s essay collection, Trick Mirror, lacked depth, but this 27-page short story has so much to say!
