While I am absolutely certain that this book is phenomenal, it is not one that I was able to get through unfortunately. I was aware going in that child loss was a theme, but I was wholly unprepared for the way that that seem would play out within pages of this book. I will absolutely try another of this authors books at a later date.

A challenging read both intellectually and emotionally but incredibly rewarding (I could say that about every Toni Morrison novel I’ve read, but it’s especially accurate for Beloved). I would recommend reading a few other novels by Morrison before diving into this one so that you’re comfortable with her style—Beloved still has Morrison’s gorgeous prose but the narrative is not presented to you in a neat package, so it can be hard to keep track of what’s happening. This is a book to savor and read over and over again throughout your life so that you can take note of the details you’ve missed and new discoveries made :)
