In a house outside if Cincinnati in the years following the Civil War, former slave Sethe and her daughter Denver live in isolation, sharing their space with the ghost of the child Sethe murdered when slave-catchers came for her.
The lasting effects of slavery are examined through this ghost story that brings the horrors past of life on a farm called Sweet Home into the haunted present. On a purely horror-story level, the returned Beloved is creepy in dozens of subtle ways, while the story is also operating on a symbolic level.
Morrison's mastery of language is also on full display, with brilliantly powerful phrasing and images.
