The main character sucks.
I already didn’t like her in the beginning when she shows how insecure she is of herself by constantly comparing her appearance to her best friend. Can we please move on from this idea that all women are secretly jealous of their best friends??
Her methods of being involved in this murder is too direct for a stranger who just moved to a small town, especially since she’s not even obsessed with murder mysteries that much. She also just makes random assumptions a lot with basically no evidence to back up any of it and that’s about 90% of the book.
There’s very little actual sleuthing and the “clues” that we do find are not as clever as the author may have thought. Like what the hell even is peanut dust? And if I were to poison someone with a peanut allergy with peanut dust, why would I use the air vent?
Also, I don’t understand why the murderer ended up being his mistress, who was jealous because she also slept with the wife?? Which also does not make sense because in what reality would someone want to sleep with their husband’s mistress, even if they were bisexual???
This book had a lot of potential and it was really disappointing how it ended up.

A cute cozy based in a brand new coffee shop/ bookstore. A good effort for a first in a new series.

Typical cozy mystery. The author managed to put me off of the idea of ever getting a cat.

I only got 3% into this book and had to set it to DNF because I could not abide the author’s awful mode of describing women—it just felt icky.

2.5 stars - I rounded up because I might read the next one in the series in hopes that it gets better because there are 8 others in the series thus far. I had a hard time connecting and liking the main character. I was actually pretty surprised that she wasn't killed herself because of the way she bluntly asked questions of "suspects". She came across as wishy-washy and/or juvenile (Does he like me? I send a Facebook friend request two seconds ago and he hasn't responded so he must be mad at me.) I don't know if this is because the author is a man and writing how he thinks a woman would act. She just didn't come across as believable. And what is with the cookie in coffee? A soggy cookie doesn't sound appetizing or drinkable.

I really wanted to like this book - it had plenty of promise, but ultimately it irritated me more than it entertained me. If you want an author who can pull off a disingenuous heroine, try the Sookie Stackhouse series. What kind of a person opens a bookshop but has never heard of "literary fiction"??? And don't get me started on people who open coffee houses without appreciating coffee....

Couldn't. Just... No. MC wasn't cute, endearing or even nice. She has a cat, yay?

Nosy and rude and snotty, Krissy Hancock served coffee to man who later died across the street from her newly opened cafe/bookstore. As someone new to the town and literally knowing no one, this would be the golden opportunity to meet new friends right? Except, for an amateur sleuth she has no tact and no business asking anyone anything. At least figure out a nice way to get your questions into a conversation!

I don't have cats but I like them well enough. But when there's a longer paragraph about the cat's refusal or inability to use the litter box than an explanation of why the main character talks so cruelly to people trying to be friendly, I'm sorry, but I lost patience. I tried to keep going because it was a free book but I couldn't. 37% DNF, didn't even care whodunit.
