A family of incestuous cannibals search the woods for prey and when they find Carla and her friends on a retreat in a secluded, rented cabin miles away from civilisation, they believe they’ve hit the jackpot.
This book was so ridiculously slow for the first 130 pages. After that, I can’t even give it any praise anyway because of how misogynistic and disgusting the author is. I actually almost dnf’ed this but it’s this month’s read for bookclub so I persevered. The author actually at one point writes that the female main character likes rough sex because women ‘naturally have r*pe fantasies.’ I can’t stand male authors who overly sexualise every single female character. Literally every single time a woman comes up in this story the only thing mentioned is her ‘tits’. The fact that all of the characters have had, or want to, sleep with each other was just bizarre and unnecessary as well. It doesn’t sit right with me either when it’s always only the women in the story who experience torture and the long, brutal deaths but the men either don’t get killed or if they do they’re just stabbed once or shot. All the characters were dull and had nothing to them. I didn’t feel invested and therefore didn’t care what happened to them which I think took a lot of suspense away from the story for me. This was overall a real shame because the concept was super creepy and could’ve been executed a lot better.

Kept losing me starting at the halfway mark. Felt like it was rambling. 2 stars because it was very detailed and descriptive.

So. Much. Gore.

This book confused the hell out of me at the start. I still don’t live the multiple perspectives narration - especially when not all the characters are related to each other. However, once the book picked up - it started to become a great read. The horror/thriller was perfect balance, and there was enough gore to make me shocked but not revolted. The ending was much needed punch in the gut. Not particularly satisfying but rather a great fit for the overall story. Something which many books can not pull off. Originally reading i was annoyed/mad about killing off Nick, but now I understand and can appreciate why it had to be done.
