I found Away with the Penguins hard to get into. For a large chunk of the book I found the characters intensely unlikable. Ridged, uncompromising, shallow and determined to see the worst in other people, I couldn't imagine becoming as invested in the story as I did. But then our leading lady Veronica gets a bee in her bonnet about saving the penguins, and suddenly the need to be in Antarctica is too strong to deny. Surrounded by harsh conditions, minimal luxury and the gleeful company of the penguins, the book becomes a tale of transformation. Learning that it's never to late to let people in or to change, Veronica becomes someone determined to make a difference in the world, and the lives of those around her. Away with the Penguins is about finding family, and through that journey finding yourself. Beautifully written, it will take you on a gripping journey.
