This is maybe the first book I've read on the topic of hearing God's voice, decision making, and prayer that balances the spiritual and the pragmatic so well. Willard is really compassionate, undoing a lot of harmful teachings on decision making and the hyper-charismatic. He emphasizes that God is not a mumbler or a trickster, and he doesn't speak to us in riddles. Willard also teaches that God desires that his people should grow and mature and learn to trust their own voices and thoughts, which is the opposite of what I picked up on in my upbringing. This was truly helpful to me and I will always appreciate it for that.

It took me months and months to read, think and work through these pages. And I think I have barely scratched the surface. It has greatly developed the way I think about spiritual direction and how God communicates with us. It has inspired me to become the kind of person that not only hears God's voice with clarity but lives in daily conversation with him, and beyond that, to experience ever-increasing union with Jesus.

"The best book on divine guidance I have ever read. I recommend it highly." - Richard Foster

Powerful. But hang in there cause this is no walk in the park. Some of the chapters can get quite heady. Willard shows his academic focus in philosophy. But he uses great illustrations and frequently has lectio divina exercises to give the reader the opportunity for reflection. There are also helpful discussion questions at the end of each chapter.
Chapters 8 and 9 are a great reward for making it to the end. Don’t give up! I don’t know that I’ve ever worshipped the Lord while reading a book as much as I did in this one. So grateful for this book for its part in my spiritual growth.

A little too esoteric in his writing style... good subject matter but not very accessible for the typical layperson.

There wasn't a ton of new information for me, but it did a great job of pointing me toward a more attentive relationship with God. As a result of reading this, I want to be more purposeful in listening for God's voice in my life.

And one of my favorite quotes: "Grace is not opposed to effort, but to earning."

At some points It seemed like Dallas was just filling pages, but it was worth slogging trough to pickup his tidbits of insight
