Emotionally harrowing, this book - Night in particular - is widely recognized for a reason, and it lives up to those expectations. Night takes us through the first-person account of a child who suffers through the coming of the Nazis and the harsh brutality of the concentration camps, and it is guttingly told in very simple, stark prose; one of the most horrible and important things I've ever read. Dawn is a morality tale, fiction this time, about the internal struggle of a man who survived the Holocaust and now faced with executing an enemy combatant as he battles to recognize whether or not he still has a soul and what it means even if he does. Day is also a fiction piece, about a survivor trying to reconcile the guilt and pain of all he lost during the Holocaust years earlier with trying to live a happy and normal life in a world that has moved on. All three pieces compliment each other and tell a whole story overall, and I would recommend this for anyone who wants to read about both the darkness and the strength that goes into being human.
