I wanted to read this book as I wanted more of Camp Half-Blood. I loved the original PJO series, and I did want more, so I thought I would try the next series of The Heroes of Olympus, I was initially a little bit disappointed that it wasn’t Percy and the gang, but I was so shocked and the action kept me on the edge of my seat.  

When Jason, Piper and Leo crash land at Camp Half-Blood, they have no idea what to expect. Apparently, this is the only safe place for children of the Greek Gods – despite the monsters roaming the woods and demigods practising archery with flaming arrows and explosives. But rumours of a terrible curse and a missing hero are flying around camp. It seems Jason, Piper and Leo are the chosen ones to embark on a terrifying new quest, which they must complete by the winter solstice. In just four days' time. Can this new trio succeed on this deadly mission and what must they sacrifice to survive?  

I went into this book completely blind; I usually do with most books with authors I have enjoyed, but I was surprised with the multiple POVs, and I enjoyed that aspect. I did struggle with the third person aspect just because I fully enjoyed listening to Percy’s thoughts during his series and was imagining Jason, Piper and Leo’s would be the same as a bunch of young children heading out on a deadly quest and especially with Jason having no memories whatsoever. For a young adult book, this book was a super easy read, and the explanation didn’t feel like you were stupid, and I didn’t even have to google anything. I think it helped that I had read Percy Jacon already. The storyline was action-packed but also managed to give you a feel of the characters and the world we’ve are being re-introduced to. I love the found family element in this book and I love the trio. I liked seeing Thalia and Annabeth again but if you hadn’t read the first series you weren’t confused or lost.  

The ending to this book was cruel but also makes me want to jump right in especially if we get to see more of the gang like Percy and Grover and these kids are going to be so stressed over the next couple of years especially if it’s anything like Percy’s series.

I enjoyed the story, but I feel like it had less charm when compared to the Percy Jackson series. The characters weren't as lovable and there were elements that seemed to be added just for relatability (i.e. the mean girl Drew being mean for no reason besides bullying). I also wish the characters backgrounds (Leo and Jason) were more explored, but since this the first in the series, I'll allow a pass.

I think it was definitely a good thing that I waited a few months after reading the PJO series before starting this one. Boy, I really did miss this world and its characters, and this book did not disappoint! I’m hooked and I can’t wait to continue the series.

Piper and Leo’s POVs were awesome! Piper’s relationship with her dad really tugged at my heart strings, end Leo using humor to cope with the trauma of his entire childhood really hit hard. Jason’s POV was ok. The problem with him was that he usually suffered from main character syndrome, and at times he really came off as a Mary Sue. I mean, the same could be said about Percy in the original series, but the difference is that Percy was funny. 

The story was incredibly fast paced, and at times almost overwhelming. The poor trio only just found out that Greek Gods and monsters are real, and already they are battling enemies just as strong or stronger than the ones we’ve seen in The Last Olympian. I know why Rick decided to this, but in my opinion, the story could’ve benefited from a longer timeline.
The entire quest takes place over just four days and it takes them the vast amount of that time just to find Hera. In the end this meant they only had 5 minutes to liberate her. This is not hyperbole, that’s the amount of time they spent actually figuring out how to open Hera’s cage, and even less that that because they spent the first few minutes fighting an army of wolves and the Snow Goddess. I don’t know, I guess I was hoping they would figure out something more clever than “Lull the cage to sleep while I cut it with my electric saw”.
 

Anyhow, I really enjoyed this as an introduction to the new phase in the Riordanverse and I can’t wait to see how it develops!

This was hard to read at first because it took me a while to get used to the new characters. But I fell in love with them. I especially love Leo. He’s my baby and no one better hurt him or I will be throwing hands.
