Once again Jason Pargin has fulfilled my disconnected need for gore, humor, existential philosophy, and lovably imperfect characters, this time amid a zombie apocalypse. Amazing read.

I have only vague memories of “John Dies at the End” and now I feel like I want to go back and re-read it. In this sequel, Wong takes on the zombie genre, bringing back his reluctant and damaged heroes back to face yet another menace that, in many ways, they are ultimately responsible for. Gore, over the top action, body horror, social commentary, and human behavior in a crisis flow seamlessly together, bound by Wong’s snarky humor and the sheer humanity of all of his characters, especially his three heroes. I never thought I would say that love and humanity form the core of this ridiculous splatter-fest, but they do and it is all the richer for it.

"John appeared over me and said, "When they write the sequel to the Bible, that shit is definitely gonna be in there."

I wish I were able to give this book more than 3 stars...

Straight away, the cons:
This Book is Full of Spiders is no John Dies at the End. Where I appreciated the pop culture references woven into Wong's first book, I was annoyed by them in the second. Wong was not able to capture the tone of the first book and much of the writing felt forced.

The Pros?
I learned about Dunbar's Number. Thank you Dr. Marconi!
John was probably the best written character in the book, although Molly takes a close second.

I'm certainly not upset that I read this book, mostly a little disappointed with how it turned out. John Dies at the End is one of my favorite books, and I wanted the second to be just as awesome.
