Amazingly complex world and characters. Definitely the start of a series with lots of information and setting the scene but I’m really excited to dive more into this world.

The characters were very very cool and carried the book. The world building was kinda meh, it was just like “everyone’s at war ok ur caught up to speed,” but Abercrombie did an amazing job showing different cultures, you could very easily tell where in the world that character was from very fast. It definitely makes me want to read the next one because the last action sequence made me want to read the next one immediately. Very good intro to a long series.

It took me to about 40% to really start to enjoy reading this book. But once I got acquainted with the characters, and stopped trying to figure out who is "good" or "bad" and realized they might all be a mix, the book really picked up!
I read the first book to appease my husband, but I will continue to read the trilogy because I want to know what happens to each of the characters! I think I'm honestly interested in finding out what happens in each of the storylines!

Violent. Bloody. Dirty. With fantastic and diverse characters who feel genuine. I’m new to fantasy, so I can’t comment on the fantastical elements (other than that they scratched my old Dragon Age itches), but as an outsider looking in this book did ultimately end up being a hell of fun.

(I tagged racism as a content warning, but would like to specify that the racism is in universe terminology such as “pink” or in the case of more real world example, “savage.” I don’t know if the distinction is necessary, please ignore if you feel it isn’t)
