"She knew Sam would have a set of blinders on when it came to his locals. Small towns typically did. It’s hard to criticize the trees when you’re so protective of the forest."
WARNING: it's another unpopular opinion!!
I honestly should just delete all my kindle freebies, because it seems like I hardly ever get lucky with them. I mainly picked up Dead Woman Crossing because I still had to visit Oklahoma this year. I usually enjoy Bookouture books though, so I had high hopes for it... But this series was definitely a miss for me. First of all, this is more family drama than proper detective thriller for a long time, and for me this isn't a good thing. I'm never a big fan of drama, and there is a LOT of it to be found in Dead Woman Crossing. The misogyny was just way too in-your-face and I honestly started to resent having to spend time with this book. Nothing really happened until the 35% mark, and I confess that I had long started to skimread by then. Unlikeable and underdeveloped characters, way too many cliches and I wasn't a fan of the writing style either... And especially when it came to the flashbacks to the main character's time in New York as a homicide detective. They felt completely out of place and too gruesome compared to the story set in the present... True, once the murder in the present takes place things balance out a little, but it was still way too much focus on the drama for me. Add the fact that the twists were underwhelming as well, and I kind of wish I had just thrown in the towel instead. I guess it's one less series I have to worry about catching up with though?

The main character is so arrogant. I bet she said her official title “Chief Deputy Kimberly King” 20 times throughout the story.
Graphic: Body horror, Violence, and Murder
