This book is really a new classic for the middle school-age urban fantasy genre. I'm going to pass it over to anybody who wants a break from the usual and is searching for some magic little book for their kids, students and younger relatives.
The greatest issue is that it is not so much self-contained as other tales, like Akata Witch by N. Okorafor or The Amulet of Samarkand by Stroud, and that means that the reader is left at the end of what feels like a long prologue or pilot, with some of the biggest plot points still hanging.
It's also good for the adult reader, since while everything is written in the perspective of the young protagonist, you can usually fill in the blanks of his main deuteragonist, which is his grandfather, or his slightly older obnoxious sister. It also offer an interesting delve into islander Ireland, which is a not-so-usual setting, outside of Father Ted.
I had a lot of fun reading this, and you should read it too.

Considering this is a book aimed at children, I really enjoyed it (as a nearly 40 year old). The book is full of magic and wonder, and the descriptions of things are beautiful. You can get a very clear mental image and there's a great sense of place.
I listened to the audio book version, which is read wonderfully by Patrick Moy. He does very distinct voices for each character. I will definitely be listening to the other books in the series.

My son and I have enjoyed reading this together. It’s an interesting story, but the ending is a bit anticlimactic.

Oh, I ended up really enjoying this book. I want to go back to Arranmore Island as soon as possible.
Fionn has grown into a cautious and nervous 11-year old who is deathly afraid of the water though both his parents are from an island.
His mother is struggling with life after losing her husband to the sea before Fionn is born. Now, right before Fionn’s 12th birthday she sends him and his older sister to the island to stay with their grandfather. Here Fionn’s starts to see strange things and learn more about this island and its connection to his family. It is full of magic and wonder and is an intriguing story for all ages.

really good honestly my main gripe is that 11 year olds do NOT talk like that
