I liked this book more than I’ve liked the others in the series. It’s still problematic and the plot is far too easy to guess, but the ideas are still fun. I’m four books in now and I’m still of that mind that this is a good idea, but not a great execution.
Moderate: Adult/minor relationship, Animal death, Body shaming, Confinement, Death, Physical abuse, Torture, Violence, Blood, Grief, Death of parent, Murder, Fire/Fire injury, Gaslighting, Toxic friendship, Abandonment, and War

The general online consensus on this book was that it wasn't good (as second trilogies often aren't), but I liked it well enough. I had the ending figured out early, but Soman Chainani's slow reveal sometimes left me second-guessing. It's going to be an exciting trilogy! I'm not the target audience, so the twist may be more elusive to others, especially those who only read a little fantasy.
I was disappointed by the lack of Hort and Nicola. The beginning of the book made them out to be quite significant, and maybe they will be, but they still feel like sidekicks. What would the story have been like told from their POV instead of Sophie, Agatha, and Tedros?

1. It's almost 5 starrs! It's just I'm a bit disappointed that Hester and Anadil kinda can't see they did a bit wrong during the loyalty test but that kinda redeemed Dot's quality for being vigilant and the duo it's not perfect but come on aren't *they* look familiar?
My unanswered question:
Who's Kei and the snake in mask? And what do they have to do with Aric?
I can give a similar book that kinda have the same ending, tw: spoiler?
Bestie if you ever red queeennn you'll understand
