Penny Marshall writes the way she talks. She is honest, darkly comedic, deprecating, and pulls no punches. This book is a lovely little collection of vignettes from her life, a nice memoir for those who wish to know a little more about her. Sadly, as much as I love Penny and her narrative voice, there were things about this book that I wasn't a fan of. Her fat-shaming Rosie O'Donnell (pushing her to lose weight during "A League of Their Own") and dated language sometimes was so glaring I had to skim certain portions without taking it in fully. I also feel that she has a propensity for listing names of people (sometimes people no one knows other than her I'm afraid) and while I love that she wants to give credit where credit is due, but it halts the memoir in its place. Also I read this for "A League of Their Own" and that section was so darn short. 3/5 stars for me!

Fun read - many really entertaining parts. The only thing I didn't like is that the second half of the book turned into a whole lot of name-dropping and a lot less storytelling. But overall, worthwhile, good read!

Penny Marshall can still crack me up. Penny reads her biography, and listening to her is like watching her again. She brings the book to life.

I loved this book! It held my interest really well, and I read the whole book imagining her New York accent.

I knew Penny Marshall from different things so was interested in her memoir. It was an interesting read. She seems like an interesting lady. Her personality, spunk, and at time,s actual way of speaking shone through this. I had some issues with some things like the parts I found the most fascinating she breezed by with either a sentence or a quick "eh, that's life" type statement. Some parts I wish she would have expounded on and others I could have had less of. But all in all, I enjoyed it and the ending actually surprised me. I hadn't heard about her health scare so that was a shock and made me almost tear up expecting the worst. She is an interesting lady.

I think I have a bias against memoirs in general b/c I can't imagine spending that much time talking about myself, but Penny Marshall has led such an interesting life and has a funny, light way of telling it.
