So much more interesting than I ever would have guessed! I never knew before that the sonnets tell an overarching story. I always just thought there were a bunch of unconnected poems, probably because that’s how we studied them in school. We just did a handful with no context. But it’s actually a fascinating melodrama with one of the few actual love triangles I’ve ever seen.

I've read various of his sonnets many times before, but this is the first time I've read through them all in sequence. A few things are notable in looking at them as a whole --- for one thing, the guy could stick to a theme with irritating persistence 😂. Like, the first twenty sonnets about trying to get someone into bed. omg. For another, the ambiguity of the person(s) his sonnets are addressed to. It was interesting to see how the sonnets could be so specific and so nebulous at the same time. Didn't discover any new favourites, but it's always fun to revisit the handful of old ones.

♡ Sonnet 29
When in disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state,
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,
And look upon myself and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featur'd like him, like him with friends possess'd,
Desiring this man’s art and that man’s scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
Like to the lark at break of day arising
From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven’s gate;
For thy sweet love rememb'red such wealth brings
That then I scorn to change my state with kings.
When in disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state,
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,
And look upon myself and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featur'd like him, like him with friends possess'd,
Desiring this man’s art and that man’s scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,

From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven’s gate;
For thy sweet love rememb'red such wealth brings
That then I scorn to change my state with kings.
