I honestly didn’t think I’d like this book. But I was pleasantly surprised!
Even though I don’t like it when heroine are forced into marriage, but I knew right away how much Penelope already loved him from when they were children and neighbors. So even though she was kinda forced to marry him to save her sisters’ reputation (hers being already in tatters), I feel like she married him cause deep down she missed him, loved him and somehow wanted to return Falconwell to him. This was evident from the fact that she said that the lands belong to Michael when her father told her of her dowry, even though it wasn’t his for a decade now. She was probably one of the only people to still acknowledge him.
After their marriage, it was kinda slow… with Penelope waiting and Michael avoiding her (also, it might be worth mentioning that it was quite obvious Michael ALSO loved her as a child, because of how when she told him in a letter that “Tommy was her new favorite person”, Michael replied saying “No he’s not”. It’s pretty subtle, but it’s there). So it was a bit tiring hearing both of their thoughts for several chapters of how she doesn’t think she’s interesting enough for him and him thinking that she deserves better and he only married her for the land and how much it’s “just a means to an end”.
Once we get past this point, and she warns him not to touch her and that his touch dishonors her. I was living for her. I loved her so much. And I was ecstatic when HE finally started being caring towards her. I loved how she always stood her grounds, and wanted to protect her friend, Tommy, and Michael’s Soul in the process.
Afterwards, I was pretty content with the pacing of the events, and their relationship was beautifully written in my opinion.
The things that I didn’t like is that, there were several things that were NOT explained adequately in the book. Why were there several young footmen in the house? I’m assuming that Bourne, having lost everything young, wanted to give a chance to young boys at working in a house instead of struggling in the streets? But that’s only my assumption, and it might be wrong. What did Chase owe Penelope? I assumed he felt guilty because of what Bourne was about to do that day, and him being the one who took Bourne under his wings and all, and so he wanted her to have an adventure even if she lost Bourne?
Anyway, it was a pretty good read! I somehow want to know Chase’s story the most, but for now, I’m off to the next book in the series, let’s see what cross has to offer!

Romance novels have such dumb titles. It bugs me because it makes me not want to read them... I know, I know, don't judge a book by it's cover-erm-title. This was a surprisingly delightful bit of romance, though the title put me off. This was one of those, "I haven't read any historical trashy romance novels in a while and I want to, so I'll just grab the first one I get to on the shelf" type of novels. Sometimes when I'm in the library, I have these moods.
So, anyway. The book was really good. Very well written, good characters, lots of sexy sex. I mean, I get that the sex doesn't really match reality...but man, some good sexy sex makes for good reading. So, in a nutshell, if you like chiseled men, strong females, and crave sexy sex, read this book. You won't be disappointed.

I feel like giving it 3.5 stars because I liked it but my god was Bourne frustrating. I wasn't really sure about it in the beginning but it got better. I am however really exited about the next book in the series so lets hope that it lives up to my expectations

WOO that was fun! Not my favorite book of MacLean's, but Penelope was a firecracker at the end. Michael was an idiot for most of the book but once he got some sense knocked into him, he ended up a perfect compliment to Penny. Very steamy sex scenes too, which is always a plus.

I feel like the “hero“ was just a glorified jerk who didn’t deserve forgiveness or the heroine’s love. Also the heroine’s consent during the first “love“ scene was pretty dubious at best, which turned me off from this supposedly feminist romance.

Loved it, but I knew I would! I've been a big fan of Maclean's other books, and this was no exception. I'm Very much looking forward to reading Pippa's story in the next book!
