This one was better than the first one in my opinion. But still, it just felt too "modern" for my taste. I love this era (I wouldn't want to live in it though), and to me the dialogue just felt...off.

I enjoyed it, not as much as her other books. I'll still keep reading her books, but I think I might avoid this particular series.

The cover though! I just love the cover.

The Other Lady Vanishes
4 Stars

Series note: While this book focuses on a new couple and plot, characters from book 1 do make an appearance and even play pivotal roles.

After witnessing a murder during her escape from a sanitarium, Adelaide Blake seeks refuge in Burning Cove and makes a new life for herself. But Adelaide's safe haven is disrupted when Madame Zolanda, the Hollywood psychic, is found dead. Adelaide joins forces with the enigmatic Jake Truatt to uncover the truth while her past catches up with her.

Adelaide and Jake are a typical Quick couple who initially get off on the wrong foot, but soon find themselves working together to solve a mystery. They are both likable and have solid if not compeltely sizzling chemistry.

The suspense plot has some intense moments and a satisfying resolution. That said, there are several rather convoluted threads and it is not always easy to keep track of culprits and motives.

Overall, an entertaining sequel and I look forward to reading the next one.

The Other Lady Vanishes by Amanda Quick is #2/4 in the Burning Cove series. Adelaide Blake is an heiress who has been committed to an insane asylum by Conrad Massey who intended to steal her fortune. Once incarcerated, Dr. Harold Ormsby and Dr. Ethan Gill use her as experimental Patient B to do research on a new drug (imagine LSD). She escapes and assumes a new identity (Adelaide Brockton) in Burning Cove, a fancy resort on the California coast in the late 1930s. Along with the attractive Jake Truett, she solves several murders while avoiding getting murdered herself. A mystery with women in most of the roles.

If you like women as heroes and villains with a few supporting men for entertainment and comic relief, this is the mystery for you.

Read it as a recommendation from my mother. As I haven't heard of the author, I was confused (for a good part of the book) when and where the book is set. The plot is not one-of-a-kind, but for anyone who enjoys detective novels with a grain of suspense, it is an enjoyable read.

What I seemed to have minded the most, though, was the writing style. At certain points, I wondered if this book was written by a Wattpad teen author or if it was a debut novel, because it was just so... I don't know, overly simple? The characters lack a little more depth, there are too many names to keep up with, and I couldn't really feel the chemistry of the main couple. I still bared through the entirety of the novel, and can't say I didn't like it.

This wasn't as good as the first one. The B-couple was way more interesting and had more chemistry than the main characters, and the mystery was too convoluted.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series and was very happy to see that the second book delivered similar enjoyment while reading it. A lot of plot twists and turns as snippets were revealed and more questions needed answering. A favorite thing was how this series is based on a place so the main characters in the first book are still around, helping the main characters in this book. Minor characters from the first make an appearance in the second and it's obvious that they will continue to play their part in future stories ... maybe even star in a later book so we can learn more about them.
