After watching Sophia Thakur perform some of her work online, I was interested in reading a collection of her poems. It is clear she is a really talented poet and performer, and I found her spoken word pieces really powerful.
As is the case when I read poetry, I couldn’t connect to some portions of the collection. For this reason I find it difficult to give poetry collections a rating. I do recommend checking out her spoken word performances online, and if you are a poetry fan, this collection is definitely worth checking out- there is a wide range of themes that are touched upon. I would definitely say that these poems would resonate with teens and young people in particular.
The poems come from a place of deep emotion and honesty, Somebody Give This Heart a Pen shows a range of poems, from brutal, to touching, to powerful. My personal favourites from the collection are: “the itty bitty titty committee”, fidgeting, and Secrets.
