This book was so poorly written I couldn’t keep reading. It felt like reading 400 pages of high school essays. That is cruel. But I was really disappointed. I was very excited for this book, and it really disappointed.

An informative, engagingly told account of the relationship between birds and humans in which we come out looking both dangerous and foolish but they pay the ultimate price. I’m glad I read this, even though it was a depressing read. I learnt a lot that was entirely new to me (China’s campaign to eliminate sparrows because they ate grain ended up contributing to a famine because it led to a boom in the insect population) and also learnt that not all of what I thought I knew was accurate (Darwin wasn’t the one who figured out the evolutionary implications of the Galapagos finches). I loved the depth of each section and the overall breadth of the book as a whole.

Delightful and then depressing! But completely informative and interesting. Came out loving several new birds because of their histories!
