Wow. Just wow. This was an emotionally charged piece.Â
My initial feelings towards the leading character were negative. The nurse, a nightingale, and a stranger to the community, comes into the story full of prejudice towards all that is around her. As we go through the novel, it seems this prejudice is transformed into justified anger. I wish that we had in some way reckoned her blatant biases- hence the missing 5th star
But oh my god is this story heartbreaking from beginning to end. It is, in my interpretation, an exploration of where the lines of religion and insanity blur.Â
The book left me feeling a lot. Angry, sad, thoughtful. It feels like a critique of being passive, a plea to do something, anything about injustices hiding in plain sight
