I read this because I missed Sookie. What I found was that Harper could not fill the void for me...and with out an Eric to lust after...what's the point?

Devoured this book in a day. Now I'm going through withdrawals until I can get my hands on the second one.

This book gives off serious Ghost Whisperer vibes and it’s really a great little read. The lead character had a tough childhood, as a teen was struck by lightning and as a result, she can sense the dead. She finds their bodies and sees the moments they die, she uses this power as a means to survive. Traveling town to town to help those that hire her. She finds herself and her brother in trouble when things don’t unfold as smoothly as expected in Sarne, Arkansas. Harper is a girl who struggles to cope with day to day life, thanks to the trauma of her childhood and accident. Tolliver, her brother is her rock and protection. They meet Hollis Boxleitner, the hardened by life cop, Sybil the wealthy mother of a dead teenage son, Helen the alcoholic mother of two dead daughters. As the story unfolds you learn that almost everyone in this small town is interconnected and their families have lived there for generations.

Some of the connections and plot points are a bit predictable, others were really well executed and unexpected. You also get a decent amount of background for several characters without it feeling forced into the story. That’s something I appreciate, learning a bit about why characters are the way they are, it’s not easy to tie those details in. There were a few pieces of the story that I wish had been wrapped up a bit more, some of the connections or whys behind events were not revealed. Overall I really enjoyed the read though!

I am not sure if I enjoyed this book or not. I found it a bit uninteresting in several parts. It also seemed to be pretty repetitive and I am unsure if it is to set the foundation of this series or not. I liked the 2 main characters so I plan to give it another try before making a decision on this series.

This is a series I got because I love the Sookie Stackhouse series. Very far from both the story-telling and the character-building of the Southern Vampires!

Harper Connelly has the unique ability to sense not only the whereabout of human remains, but also the cause of death. Together with her stepbrother/business manager, Tolliver Lang, Harper travels to Sarne Alabama at the request of a grieving mother desperate to locate the body of the young woman her deceased son is accused of killing in a murder/suicide. However, this seemingly simple case takes a dangerous turn when Harper becomes the target of someone determined to keep the truth buried...

Charlaine Harris’s cozy mysteries are rapidly becoming addictive. Harris is a master at characterization and is exceptionally skilled at capturing the essence of small town life (although not everyone is Sarne is as open and accepting of Harper’s differences).

Harper's dry, matter of fact personality and intriguing abilities make her a very appealing heroine. She and Tolliver have an interesting dynamic as they share a closeness not usually found in non-biological siblings, and there is a certain amount of subtle sexual tension between the two that they are apparently not yet ready to confront.

The who-done-it is well written with a number of plausible suspects and sufficient clues to figure out the twist before the end. The incorporation of paranormal elements feels natural and adds another layer to the suspense.

Alyssa Bresnahan's narration is well-executed and she relays the dry wit and stoicism inherent to Harper's character very well. Looking forward to Harper and Tolliver's further adventures.
