I’m torn between 3 and 4 stars, let’s say I’ll give it 3.5 stars. I absolutely adored some of the stories like Berenice and The Tell Tale Heart and would give them 5 stars easily. I liked the morbid and gothic nature of his work and he was definitely a man before his time in terms of writing. However, my enjoyment of the stories was inconsistent even though I loved some I really didn’t like or was simply bored by others. I think that’s quite an unpopular opinion though so I wouldn’t let this review deter you from reading Poe’s work, it is definitely worth reading. Especially The Tell Tale Heart.

What to say? To review Edgar Allan Poe? His stories, for me, are far beyond any attempt at review.

Poe has been one of my favorite writers ever since I listened to his stories read aloud to me on Halloween night. His writing, both prose and poetry, is such fun to listen to, really leaps off the page and listening to Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone is a real treat. This collection of some of Poe’s more famous stories and poems are perfect for October listening.

My absolute favorite story will always be the Cask of Amontillado and listening to the coughs and gasps of Fortunato and the false cheer of Montresor was quite fun. I could picture them moving through the damp nitre encrusted caverns of a vault. I absolutely love the word "immure." The voice acting was superb all around.

My only disappointment in the collection was that the audio quality was occasionally a bit off, too quiet and a bit hard to hear and that I wish that the poems/stories were introduced before launching into their recitation, with a title at least!

This made for fun seasonal listening, recommended for a dark stormy autumn night.

Ah, Halloween. I love this month. I love this season. Why? Because it gives me a really good excuse to wear sweaters (without dying from heat or them being practical to survive) and I get to reread things that I really like. Such as Poe. He's definitely not my favorite author. I could care less about most of his poems or his ventures into sci-fi. However, I love his horror.

This little collection has some old favorites, some new things, and some stuff I still don't like. It has the staples. "Black Cat", "The Cask of Amontillado", "The Tell-Tale Heart", "The Pit and the Pendulum" (which I still hate), "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar" (which I have started liking more each time I hear/read it), and a couple others I can't remember. It also had a few others that I never heard or I love but are never included in collections. The latter is the poem "Alone". If you haven't read it, go and do it right now. It's such a beautiful poem. And really short. Like, a stanza or two is all.

Not only that but they're read by Vincent Price* and Basil Rathbone. The audio skipped for me at times and the sound wasn't that great, but it was worth it. I had a great time listening to these stories. I mean, it's Poe!

*Am I the only one who remembers this? I think I watched all of the episodes on a Youtube channel, then they got taken down. They were so good, and terribly underrated.
