3.5 stars on this one.

I have mixed feelings about this book because there were things I liked and things I didn't really like on this one. I love Brackston's other stories so I immediately requested this when I saw it. Overall I thought the story was great - I loved how Brackston mixed in the past with Laura's story. The things I didn't like were mostly tied to Laura's interactions with Rhys, her neighbor.

I haven't read many books about Merlin and that was one of the things that drew me into the story. I loved the historical parts of the story and honestly wished I could have had more of that.

Rhys was creepy and as his story was revealed, he became even creepier. On top of that, I was not a fan of the way Laura handled the situation with him.

Overall, this story was only ok for me. With that said, there were parts that I really did like and because of that I would encourage people to check it out.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the review copy.

I’m a fan of Paula Brackston and her beautiful style of writing- but this story just didn’t do it for me. Left a lot to be desired. The story felt disconnected and rushed. There are strong themes of betrayal and loss throughout- definitely not an upper.

are usually love Paul Brackston’s work, but this was a disappointment. The characters were flat until the plot and I think romanticizing affairs is slightly off color.

This was -eh. The weird affairs and lack of story around Merlin didn’t sit well for me. It had elements that could have made it amazing- but it wasn’t there. I finished it because I just wanted to complete it. There was so much potential- just didn’t hit the mark.

I’ve discovered that I really need likable characters. The modern timeline had no one I could root for.
Spoiler Laura, the MC, cheats on her husband. Then ghosts the other guy. Doesn’t paint like she’s supposed to be good at. Can’t connect any dots about the mysterious neighbors. I don’t feel bad for her husband because he’s an arse.
The entire book felt like it was lacking ummm magic.

Glorifying adultery is not okay, and the unspoken theme that you need "true love" or "real passion" to get pregnant is gross. This began as a wonderfully vivid, interesting story and became an insult to women everywhere.

This book was okay. There was an affair but the character had no idea why. I wish there was more magic. It was a book with Merlin for goodness sake.
