The beginning is my favorite part, but overall this is still one of my childhood favorites. Will is a good character and the battle of good and evil continues to be the theme of the series. This was slightly darker than the first book, though still good for children and adults alike. 4.5 ⭐

I still remember reading this series as a 12-year-old, and realizing from the opening sentences of this book that Will Stanton and I share a birthday. And then, the things that happen to him on that birthday! How can you not love that? This was really my introduction to the whole genre of fantasy, and all of Celtic mythology, and it holds up pretty well (although it feels a tad simplistic, now).

A very enjoyable fantasy novel. Although written for children, it is more than good enough to be enjoyed by adults. It's not exactly character driven, and the main protagonist never really does anything, but rather has things done to him. But the plot has plenty of interesting twists and turns and I was never bored while reading.
