I didn't like:
  • "The kelpie" side story (the snippets at the beginning of each chapter). It was pointless, and didn't need to be included in the book. Also, I hated it. This guy caught and chained a magical creature, and after using it for his own gain, it turned into a woman and they made love (and fell in love I guess? Though I wasn't convinced). Disgusting. Sorry not sorry.
  • The sex scenes. Weird descriptions in that it wasn't romanticised but felt rather true to life which took me out of the story. It was overall very unattractive. Also, why was that man so godforsaken hairy???
  • Parts of the plot felt a bit too pointed (as in, they were used to make a point but weren't really necessary).
  • Content warning for disability. I'm not the right person to judge wether this was properly handled, but just know that ppl say some insensitive things.

What I liked:
  • Parts of the disability representation
  • The beginning was quite charming and funny (until the actual love story started. My bad).

Best part about this book? The romance. (Obviously important in a romance novel.) This is the culmination of James Trevillion's multi-book character arc. For both of us, this guy is like our ideal hero: he has true character development, but basically begins as a "lawful good" and ends as a "neutral good." That might not seem like a ton of change, but it's just right for us!

We do have a bit of a disagreement on the rest of the book. This is one of Meg's favorite Maiden Lane entries, while Laine found it equal parts enrapturing and enraging. She might love James, Phoebe, and James+Phoebe, but everything else surrounding them (which is pretty much a lot of SA: threatened, implied, and past) fell into the Too Much category.

29-Word Summaries:

Meg: What happens when you can no longer spend your life upholding law and order? You get to uphold your own moral code, that’s what.

Laine: Phoebe is over being treated like a china doll, and James is aware that she's not made of porcelain but she doesn't know because she can't see his face.

Hoyt does amazing work with bananas plots and delicious tropes. This bodyguard romance set in the 1740s is no exception! Perfect if you like grumpy/sunshine and agree that sometimes violence really is the answer.
