Batman by way of Dickens. Silly concept that just works.

Well, I'm not sure how I feel about Batman: Damned. On one hand, it's appropriately dark, gritty, and beautiful. On the other, it's a try hard effort from perpetual edge-lord, Brian Azzarello. Plot-wise, Damned is intentionally abstract and open for interpretation.

It has all of the elements of a good Batman story, but how they fit together is a little different. I don't know if that's good or bad, but I was mostly satisfied by the final pages. This is not an essential read and I imagine most Bat fans will hate this. That said, this is worth a look if only for the gorgeous Lee Bermejo art.

I can't say this graphic novel will remain with me the way its predecessor, Joker, will, but I still enjoyed it. I love that it uses A Christmas Carol to explore Batman's past, present, and future and I liked the idea of connecting Batman with Scrooge. Unfortunately it's nowhere near as haunting as Joker (I know, I shouldn't compare, and I hate doing that, but in this instance I just can't help it). Thankfully, the artwork is perfect, as always. Realistic, gritty, disturbing yet beautiful. Lee Bermejo remains one of my favourite comic book artists today.

An edited review of this book will come sooner or later, this last one was pretty bad.
